Polyphony Digital, subsidiaries of Sony Computer Entertainment, recently announced that as of December 2009, it has sold 55.45 million units across its entire series of realistic driving simulation games, Gran Turismo.

Nearly half of these sales originate in Europe, with 25.31 million units being sold in the region, while in North American 19.8 million units of Gran Turismo has been sold. 9.7 million units were sold in Japan, while Asian territories accounted for 640 000 units.

Debuting on the original PlayStation in 1997 in Japan, and then the US and Europe in 1998, Gran Turismo went on to become a phenomenon and the ‘go-to’ showcase for the PlayStation family of consoles, as well as show that a realistic racing simulator can be a popular and viable genre, as opposed to the arcade racing games that, until that point, had dominated the scene.

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, which was the series’ debut on the PlayStation 2, remains the best-selling Gran Turismo game with 14.89 million units sold, followed by Gran Turismo 4 with 10.98 million, and the original in third place, with 10.85 million units.

The long-awaited next entry to the series, Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3, recently had its date pushed back for Japan, while Western release dates for the title have been pulled with no firm confirmations either way, but if anything’s for sure, GT5 will push the 55.45 million unit figure comfortably into the 60 million bracket.
